Through the image of a Jacquard loom, the platform wants to make of the macro themes proposed, what a loom does with simple coloured yarns. The complex canvas of architecture will therefore be proposed, for the first time, through the exaltation of each of the yarns that compose it. Proposing themes of architectural origin, found and extracted from one of the 17 Goals of Agenda 2030 each time, Jacquard will use architecture as a pretext to give voice to all the disciplines that closely deal with these issues. Through call for papers, every topic can be discussed by each of the experts from the different disciplines involved. After I first painted with my hands at the age of 3, held my first brush in Kindergarden, doodled in my notebook and organised the layout of my notes in Middle School and fell in love with Art History in High School, I decided to make Art my job and my life, something that in southern Italy requires a lot of courage. I decided to dedicate energy and hard work, to invest time and money on what I thought it was the most important goal of my life: being independent doing what I love. I studied Graphic and Visual Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo in the Technology for Applied Arts Department, where I had the possibility to attend Masterclasses and Courses with national and international Artists and Designers like Giovanni Anceschi, pioneer of Kinetik Art, Jürgen Böttcher (in art “Strawalde”), and Stefan Koppelkamm, Professor in the Weissensee University of Berlin, where I studied as an exchange student. After getting my BFA Degree, I packed my experiences and ambition and I flew to Germany for my first abroad internship experience at Landor&Fitch Hamburg, one of the most prestigious Branding Agency in the world. After 4 months I was promoted into Designer, and recently into Senior Designer, working across key global brands, developing mainly packaging and visual identity systems, both locally in Europe and also across the broader network of the market of Asia, Middle East, North America and Latin America. I proudly joined J A C Q U A R D team because in a world dominated by mediocrity and will of doing less and less, I admire who still believes in something and pursue it with ambition, determination and proactivity. It is been curiosity towards the study of technical drawing and history of art and architecture, in fact, that took me to choose Building Engineering and Architecture Master Degree, after completing my high school years. During my course of study, I developed a strong interest in the field of existing heritage recovery, particularly the industrial segment. I also delved into structures design and remodelling, which I chose to deepen further as part of my thesis project. I also had the opportunity to enjoy the Erasmus+ Exchange program spending a year in the Architecture Faculty of Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) University of Aachen where I took part to international group projects holding presentation in German and English. Back in Italy, I graduated with a thesis project about the recovery of a former industrial warehouse in Aachen repurposed as market Halle, realized with BIM software Revit and Sap2000 to run the structural design and verification. Shortly after my graduation, I also attended a course to obtain the Construction Site Safety Coordinator Certificate. Eager to move my first steps into the working life, I began to collaborate as Construction Engineer with Integra AES, an Architectural and Engineering Services firm based in Rome. In this context, I have dealt with design services for a blast resistant boundary wall for a police office building in Kabul and in a refurbishment project for World Food Programme Headquarters’ offices in Rome. To date I am collaborating in the design and construction of eco-friendly single-family villas, as well as taking part in a course on "Safety coordinator during the planning and execution of works on temporary or mobile construction sites" organized by the Lazio Regional Center for Urban Studies. I believe in the importance of knowing how to range from one theme to another, of always being curious, of delving into innovative and current themes for this reason the thesis I am making deals with special structures, in particular the redevelopment and expansion of the Lugano Civic Hospital. Also, it can be applied to a variety of contexts, from design and architecture to our personal lives and living communities. Exploring new models of consumption within communities is exactly what I’m going to do in my PhD research project. My interest in this topic comes from the wish to understand what can be the basis for building a more sustainable and inclusive society. The story of how this interest was born and has grown is quite a long one, but don’t worry I won’t bother you with all its developments! I’ll note only some important steps. The first one occurred more or less four years ago, when a friend told me about Raphael Fellmer, a German guy who took care of the problem of food waste founding the first platform for food sharing in Germany (foodsharing.de). The second crucial step of this story was the period I spent in Utrecht (NL) as an Erasmus student, where I noticed how much my Dutch colleagues were aware of the consequence of their own consumption choices, either in food, apparel and transportation fields. Back to Italy, my interest drew me to focus on second hand clothing consumption for my master thesis project, which led me to publish in 2019 an article on the review “Psicologia Sociale”, together with professors Edoardo Lozza and Cinzia Castiglioni, of Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. The most recent step was entering an Italian network of young students and professionals passionate for sustainability (www.csrnatives.net). She graduated in Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2011. She works as an architect for a couple of years in her country and then by chance and luck, she moves to Seville where she stays living and working as an Interior Designer for 5 years. This city completely captivated her, she fell in love with its people, with the streets full of art, with the patios with orange trees, with the Spring Festival, with the flowers in her hair, the ruffles and the polka dots of the Seville costumes. In 2018 Martina had to leave her beloved Seville and move to Barcelona. Here the architectural projects she was following gave her less and less space to creativity and so she began to feel frustrated. She starts to feel that she has something inside that stirred her, something that wanted to find a way out through expression: it was her creative restlessness that she normally let off steam in interior design projects. So, she starts to investigate the world of handmade paper collages and turns out that this technique is the best way for her, to vent and express herself. Moved by a constant creative concern, Martina cuts and paste to give voice to her creativity and be happy, make collages it’s the only thing she make feels truly fulfilled. ARTISTIC CURRICULUM She forms her artistic taste by attending the Fine Arts “Preziosine Liceum” in Monza, Italy. Her life as a collagist is very recent and self‐taught: she has only been making collages and establishing himself in this world since January 2018. She is a great observer, visits exhibitions and thanks to social networks she has contacted contemporary collagists from across the pond, with whom she exchanges advice, observations and points of view. My first steps in the world of construction began when I was a kid, walking around the construction sites my dad was managing at the time. The insight I always had got for architecture and buildings led me to enroll in the Master of Building Engineering and Architecture. During my studies, I developed a strong interest in Urbanism and Landscape Architecture connected with the idea of the environment of a community. My passion for landscaping bloomed during my study period abroad. I joined the Erasmus+ Exchange Program and spent a year in the Architecture Faculty of Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. I participated in group projects and workshops, both in English and German languages. During this time, I experimented with parametric architecture, designing and operating robotic arms from Kuka. I came in contact with Japanese architecture during a course about traditional Japanese culture construction and had the opportunity to learn from experienced masters. Longing for doing more at RWTH, I dedicated part of my thesis work to the landscape requalification of some inland towns in Sicily. With the support of the Landscape Architecture Chair of the RWTH, I carried out statistical research about the number of foreigners interested in visiting these small towns. Then, I tried to interpret the needs of possible visitors through a survey and looked for a compromise with the necessities of the local population. The final goal was to design a hybrid environment that could satisfy two distant social realities. Finally, once back in Palermo, I finished my project idea and completed my studies on the 31st of March, 2021. As a new graduate, I was eager to take my first steps in the work world. I flew to Spain, where I’m currently working at the SOL89 architecture studio in Sevilla. Galatolo Spazio Liquido is a cultural project started in 2018 on the seaside of Genova. “Liquido” like the water of the Mediterranean sea, it aims at continuous evolution through the integration of new ideas and voices. In 2018 they presented Agorark a project aimed at stimulating the debate on analogies in architecture by publishing a series of irreverent architectural collages. In 2019 together with Luca Aly, they participate as GALE in a workshop for the redevelopment of the former mental hospital in Genova Quarto. Editor Building Engineer The fuel that moved my life from the earliest stages of my existence has always been my curiosity. It has been curiosity towards the study of technical drawing and history of art and architecture, in fact, that took me to choose Building Engineering and Architecture master’s degree, after completing my high school years. During my course of study, I developed a strong interest in the field of existing heritage recovery, particularly the industrial segment. I also delved into structures design and remodelling, which I chose to deepen further as part of my thesis project. I also had the opportunity to enjoy the Erasmus+ Exchange program spending a year in the Architecture Faculty of Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) University of Aachen where I took part to international group projects holding presentation in German and English. Back in Italy, I graduated with a thesis project about the recovery of a former industrial warehouse in Aachen repurposed as market Halle, realised with BIM software Revit and Sap2000 to run the structural design and verification. Shortly after my graduation, I also attended a course to obtain the Construction Site Safety Coordinator Certificate. Eager to move my first steps into the working life, I began to collaborate as Construction Engineer with Integra AES, an Architectural and Engineering Services firm based in Rome. After that experience I was involved in an internship at the Technical and Real Estate Department of the Senate of the Republic, where I performed a mapping of Senate’s buildings architectural barriers and pursuing their adjustment possibilities in accordance with the current regulation. After some short collaborations during the pandemic period, I landed in the renewable energy sphere where I am currently working in the development of utility scale photovoltaic plant. This growing sector fascinates me and give me the opportunity to explore a world that was quite unknown to me. Today I am happy to be part of the process that will lead to the decarbonization and be involved into the transition towards a low-emissions economy. Editor Architect I remember the day I realized I was an architect. It happened unexpectedly; a strong creative impulse and a feeling of stomach bite turned quickly into a necessity, a pressing need to make a choice that would have influenced my whole life. What does it mean to be an architect? It means to see the world with different eyes, creative and critical, but also to be charged with a sense of strong responsibility. The architect's work has in fact immediately brought with its burdens and honors: being free to read the city, the landscape and society with the eyes of those who not only belong to it, but are able to leave a sign. On the other hand, there is a strong responsibility linked to these operations. For this reason, I felt it was fundamental to be totally involved not only in the architectural studies, but also in that complex and international society that has guided me throughout my professional growth. After graduating at the University of Roma Tre with a Bachelor's Degree and completing a year at the RWTH University of Aachen as an Erasmus student, I decided to challenge myself again by starting my master's degree at the TU in Munich. During my stay in Munich I was able not only to get to know a culture quite far from mine, appreciating its merits and defects, but thanks to my work experience (at the a+p studio and the ringvanrittau studio) I soon experienced for myself what it meant to be a young architect today.
